Winter Is Coming… and So Is the Mould: Tenant Tips to Keep Damp at Bay

As the nights draw in and your heating bill starts to resemble a phone number, there’s another seasonal guest you didn’t invite—mould. It’s the unholy trinity of winter: cold, condensation, and that suspicious black patch creeping across your bathroom ceiling like it’s auditioning for a horror film. But fear not! As a tenant there are a number of ways you can help prevent these issues from developing in your home, to help keep you dry, warm, and fungus-free.

1. Ventilate Your Home Properly
Even when it’s chilly, open windows for a few minutes daily to let moisture escape. Use extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms, and keep internal doors open to help air circulate. Do not put furniture up against colder external walls. Mould loves stagnant air so don’t give it a chance to settle in.

2. Control Humidity
Wipe down windows and surfaces after cooking or showering. If condensation is a regular issue, consider using a dehumidifieror even placing bowls of salt around the house as that will help absorb the moisture.  Keep indoor humidity below 60% if possible.

3. Heat Smartly
Keep your home consistently warm and ventilated so as avoid it becoming a humid box. Bleed radiators, do not block them with furniture, and ask your landlord about insulation or draught-proofing if needed. A warm home is a dry home.

4. Dry Clothes Wisely
Avoid drying laundry indoors unless it’s in a well-ventilated space. Wet clothes release litres of moisture into the air, which mould will happily feast on.

5. Reporting a problem
If your damp or mould problem may be down to external factors that are not caused by condensation then report it to your landlord immediately. Document it with photos and dates. Early action can prevent bigger problems and protect your health.

Winter might be damp, but your home doesn’t have to be. With a few tweaks, you can keep mould out and comfort in.
